One of the things I hear a lot after face work, like sculpting manual massage lifting facials and buccal massage, is how quickly skin can look glowing and refreshed. Microneedling is different though. The most important rule in the first 48 hours after collagen induction therapy microneedling is simple: keep your skin clean and hydrated, and keep it out of heat, sweat, makeup, pools, saunas, and direct sun. If you see increasing pain, pus, or spreading redness, call me right away.
Your first 24 to 48 hours: clean hands, gentle cleanse, zero “extras”
My 80-minute Collagen Induction Cosmetic Microneedling Therapy includes cleansing, toning, a sculpting massage, then precision microneedling across the face and neck. Those controlled micro-injuries are what kick off collagen renewal. Your job at home is to protect that fresh, open skin barrier.
Non-negotiable for day 1: clean hands only on your face. No picking. No “just a little” makeup. Keep it calm.
Do this
- Wash with a gentle cleanser and cool to lukewarm water. Pat dry, don’t rub.
- Use only the gentle post-care products I send you home with. This is usually a hydrating, hyaluronic-based serum or moisturizer and a simple barrier-supporting layer.
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase and keep hair products away from your face and neck.
Avoid this
- Makeup for at least 24 hours (often 48 hours is better if you’re still red or feeling warm).
- Topical actives like retinol/retinoids, acids, benzoyl peroxide, strong vitamin C, scrubs, and anything “tingly” for 7 to 14 days.
- Touching, picking, or “checking” texture in the mirror. That’s how irritation turns into a longer recovery.
Days 2 to 7 in Mequon: sweat, sun, and lake plans are the real test
In northern Mequon, especially along the Port Washington Road corridor near Mequon Town Center and River Club, the biggest aftercare slip-ups I see are heat and sun exposure. In summer, the sun is strong and the lake breeze can trick you into thinking you’re not getting much UV. You are.
For the first 24 to 72 hours, I generally recommend skipping heavy exercise, saunas, hot yoga, and hot showers. Sweat and heat tend to increase inflammation, and you want calm skin while that collagen induction treatment response gets going. If you’re a busy commuter or parent, this is where timing helps. Early-morning or evening appointments can make it easier to avoid walking out into midday heat right after microneedling.
Swimming and hot tubs: I want you out of pools, lakes, hot tubs, and saunas for at least 72 hours. It’s not about being strict. It’s about lowering irritation and infection risk while your skin is extra vulnerable.
If you’re coming in from Thiensville, Grafton, Cedarburg, Fox Point, Brown Deer, or Milwaukee, plan your first few days like you’d plan a fresh face treatment. Keep it clean, keep it cool, and keep it protected so you actually see the smoother texture and glow you came in for.
Product rules that protect your microneedling result (and what to pause)
I’m big on simple aftercare. The goal is hydration and barrier support, not a “full routine.” Keep using only the gentle serum and moisturizer I recommend, and let your skin settle before you bring actives back in.
Pause for 7 to 14 days
- Retinol and prescription retinoids
- AHA/BHA exfoliants, enzyme exfoliants, and scrubs
- Strong acne actives like benzoyl peroxide (unless I tell you otherwise)
SPF is part of aftercare
Use broad-spectrum SPF and physical barriers for at least 7 to 14 days. Hats count. Shade counts. “Just a quick drive” without protection tends to show up later as uneven tone. If you’re out and about in Mequon summer sun, be extra strict.
Redness timeline, makeup timing, and the stuff that’s normal
Most people look and feel a bit sun-kissed right after microneedling. Redness often lasts 24 to 72 hours, and it can come with a tight, warm feeling. Some dryness or light flaking later in the week is common too. That’s your skin turning over.
Makeup: I generally recommend waiting at least 24 hours, and often 48 hours is the smarter call. If you’re still red, dry, or sensitive, let your skin breathe.
And yes, this is the part that can feel hard if you love your routine. But the clients who follow the “gentle and boring” plan are usually the same ones who end up happiest with their collagen therapy results over the next few weeks.
When to call me, and how I support you after you leave
I don’t want you guessing. A lot of my long-time clients come to me for everything from facials close to me searches, to eyebrow tinting, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, and even the best anti wrinkle facial options like sculpting facials, lifting facials, microcurrent, and massage lifting work. Part of why they stick around is that I answer questions and I’m timely about it.
Call if you notice any of the following
- Redness that keeps getting worse after day 2, especially if it’s spreading
- Increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, or feeling unwell
- Pus, unusual drainage, or anything that looks like infection
"Booking online is super easy or if you need to call to book an apt. she is very timely in her responses."
