Nervous About Your First Makeup Consultation? What to Expect
By Esthetics by Liliya Skin Spa | October 14, 2026
Serving Mequon, WI, including the Port Washington Road corridor near Mequon Town Center and River Club.
You’re not overthinking it. A first Makeup Consultation can feel oddly personal, especially if you’ve had skin ups and downs and you want to look like you, just more polished. I hear that nervousness all the time. The good news is it’s usually simple and very practical. People come to me because they want real guidance, the kind that makes you feel confident right after you leave. One long-time client described finishing a session and seeing immediate results, saying, “I feel like I have a new face and it’s glowing.” That’s the energy I bring into a makeup consult too, clear steps, thoughtful choices, and no guesswork.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to prep, what we do during the consult (including color matching and trial touches), and how to plan for Mequon’s four seasons, including those humid August events that demand makeup that stays put.
Before your Makeup Consultation: 6 things to bring (and 2 to skip)
Quick truth: The consult goes smoother when I can see your real skin tone and hear what you actually wear day to day.
- Reference photos of makeup you like. Bring 2 to 5, and tell me what you like about each (skin finish, eyeliner shape, lip color, brow fullness).
- Your everyday makeup bag if you have one. Even if you hate it, it tells me what textures you’re drawn to and what might be triggering dryness or breakouts.
- A list of sensitivities (fragrance, certain sunscreens, lash glue, nickel reactions, etc.). If you’ve ever had a reaction, let me know before I swatch anything.
- Event details if this is for a bridal makeup consultation or a special occasion: date, ceremony time, indoor or outdoor, and if photos are midday or evening.
- Your skincare routine written down, including prescription topicals. Skin prep affects foundation more than most people realize.
- A hair plan (up vs down). It changes how we balance cheeks, highlight placement, and lip intensity.
Two things to skip: don’t show up in heavy, long-wear foundation, and don’t feel like you need to “fix” your skin that morning with extra exfoliation. I’d rather see your skin calm and moisturized. If you’re coming from Thiensville, Grafton, Cedarburg, or Fox Point, build in a few minutes so you’re not rushing. It makes a difference.
Makeup Consultation, step-by-step (30 to 90 minutes, no awkward surprises)
Most consultations land somewhere between 30 and 90 minutes. The timing depends on what you need. A quick everyday refresh and shade match is faster. A bridal makeup consultation with multiple options and photos takes longer.
1) The conversation (this is where I save you money)
We start with what you’re trying to solve. Maybe your foundation always oxidizes. Maybe you want brows that look full but not harsh. Maybe you’ve struggled with adult acne and you’re scared makeup will flare it up. I ask about your routine, what you’ve tried, and what you hated. People tell me they appreciate straight answers and not feeling pushed into a sales pitch, so I keep it practical.
2) Skin check and tone match (undertone matters in Wisconsin seasons)
I look at your skin tone, undertone, and surface condition that day. In Mequon, summer humidity and winter dryness change how makeup sits. If you’re booking in late summer, I’ll lean into long-wear choices that handle heat and photos without turning heavy. If it’s winter, I’ll focus on skin-friendly textures so you don’t look flaky by noon.
3) Swatches, textures, and a short trial (so you can actually see it)
Then we test shades and formulas. I’ll usually swatch along your jawline and blend so you can see how it disappears into your neck. If we do a short trial, I’ll apply a few key pieces, like base, blush placement, brow shape, or a lip option, so you can feel the difference between “pretty” and “right for you.” And yes, I’ll talk you through application methods so you can repeat it at home.
If you’re anxious about being judged: You won’t be. People come in skeptical and stressed, and they often tell me they feel comfortable quickly because I explain what I’m doing and why.
After your consult: how to make the look last in August humidity and January dryness
Right after a Makeup Consultation, you’ll usually leave with a clear plan: what shades match you, what textures sit best on your skin, and how to apply them without fussing for 30 minutes. If we do any trial application, I’ll often suggest you step into natural light and take a couple photos on your phone. Makeup can look different under indoor bulbs, and I want you confident in real life, not just in the mirror.
“For the first time, in many many years I went to a party feeling confident in my own skin.”

If your consult is for an event, I generally recommend scheduling your fuller trial at the same time of day as the event. Morning light is different than evening light, and your skin behaves differently too. Late summer weddings around Mequon and the Port Washington Road corridor can be humid, so we’ll talk through wear time, touch-up strategy, and which steps actually matter (usually base prep, setting, and the right formula choices).
If you’re also doing skincare with me, this is where it connects. When your skin is calmer and more balanced, makeup gets easier. Many people who come for facials close to me start asking about makeup because they finally like their skin again.
Pricing, patch tests, and no-pressure product talk (so you can relax)
My Makeup Consultation is $30. I like keeping the first step approachable, especially for busy professionals and parents juggling school calendars and commutes on I-43. If you need an early-morning or evening appointment around Mequon Town Center, let me know what you’re working with and I’ll do my best to fit you in.
If you have sensitivities, we can do patch testing. Sometimes that looks like a small product test on the inner arm or behind the ear, then you watch for irritation over the next day or two. For bridal makeup consultation timelines, that means don’t wait until the week of the wedding. Give yourself room to test, adjust, and breathe.
And product purchases are never assumed. I’ll tell you what’s worth changing and what you can keep using. I’ve had clients say they appreciate that I’m honest about the time-frame and what will actually get results. That same straightforward approach applies here.
My 5 consultation tips that make you look like you (especially for photos)
- Tell me one thing you always struggle with. Dark circles, brows, foundation that separates. One clear pain point speeds everything up.
- If you want “natural, ” define it. Natural to one person means no mascara. Natural to another means full lashes and nude lips.
- If you’re acne-prone, don’t chase heavy coverage first. We’ll focus on a smoother base and strategic concealing so your skin still looks like skin.
- Plan for Mequon weather. Humid summer days need different choices than dry winter air, especially for base and setting steps.
- If you’re coming in for other work like dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, microneedling, or a professional facial, ask me about timing. Skin services and makeup play well together when they’re scheduled smart.
If you’re ready for a consult that’s calm and specific: book your Makeup Consultation and bring your makeup bag and a couple photos. If you’re in Cedarburg, Grafton, Fox Point, or Milwaukee and you need weekend timing for an event, reach out early so we can lock in a spot that works.
